Contract for Servant without an Indenture (1665)

CONTEXT

In the following contract, dated March 14, 1664, Lott Richards, a merchant from Bristol, England, sells an indentured servant boy named William Freeman to John Barnes.

FULL TEXT

Know all men by these presents that I lott Richards of the Citty of Bristoll Merchant haveing transported in the ship Called the ranee bow of the above Citty att my personal Cost and Charge one Sarvant boy by name William freeman being about eleven yeares old and haveing noe indenture for him I doe by these presents assigne over the said Sarvant unto John Barnes of Lower Chipoaks or to his assigns for the full tearme of eight yeares from the arrival of the ship he came in which was in November 64 and att the Expiration of the abovesaid Right is to be absolutly free from the said Barnes and alsoe my self as witness my hand the 18 February Anno 1664 the said Barnes to pay his full due According to the Custom of this Country
