Pamunkey Petition

On October 4, 1798, eleven leaders of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe signed this petition to enable them to elect trustees to represent the tribe’s interests in the General Assembly. The petition called for them to invest their power in trustees “to Regulate and make Such laws as seem most best for our happiness agreable with the Voice of the majority Indians.”
