Vinegar Hill After Demolition

This photograph, taken around 1965, shows a portion of Charlottesville’s recently razed Vinegar Hill neighborhood from West Main and Ridge streets. A statue of Lewis and Clark with a kneeling Sacagawea is visible in the foreground. The Vinegar Hill lots that had once held homes and businesses sat empty for several years before the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority began to accept bids from developers. Former residents of Vinegar Hill expressed frustration that they were forced out of their homes only to see the property sit empty for years.
