University of Virginia Medical Center Model

This mid-1960s photograph shows a model of the planned expansion of the University of Virginia medical center. The surrounding historically Black community of Gospel Hill stood in the way of the university’s construction plans, and Charlottesville applied for urban renewal grants to secure the property. While the application for federal money failed, the project was eventually completed through private funding.
