Chapter 15 of The Negro in Virginia (1940), titled “Thirty and Nine,” describes the punishment of slaves in Virginia and draws on the recollections of formerly enslaved African Americans. One of a planned series of “racial studies” undertaken by the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Writers’ Project, the book was completed by the Virginia Writers’ Project.
