Dust Bowl in Kansas

Large drifts of soil deposited during a dust storm are piled up on a farm near Liberty, Kansas, in March 1936. The photographer Arthur Rothstein chronicled the plight of farms and farmers on the prairies during the Dust Bowl, a period in the 1930s marked by long-term drought, dust storms, and severe erosion. Rothstein was working for the federal government's Resettlement Administration (RA), later called the Farm Security Administration (FSA). This image is part of the  FSA/OWI Collection of photographs at the Library of Congress.
