The Taking of the City of Washington in America

A wood engraving created in London depicts British forces under Major General Ross on August 24, 1814, as they burn sections of Washington, D.C. According to the key at the bottom of the print, the British destroyed "The American Flotilla … The Presedants [sic] Palace … The Senate House … The Treasury." Damages amounted to $30 million.
