This is the printed version of a December 10, 1834, address that Joseph C. Cabell, then a member of the House of Delegates, delivered to the citizens of Richmond, urging them to purchase shares of stock in the James River and Kanawha Company. Cabell was an advocate for the James River and Kanawha Canal, and he supported its expansion farther west to encourage economic development in Virginia. In 1835 he became the president of the canal company.
