Proclamation of 1763

King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763 to announce the terms of peace with France following the Seven Years' War. It confirmed the creation and boundaries of four new colonies —Quebec, East Florida, West Florida, and Grenada—and set up the terms for their governments. It granted acreage of varying amounts to American officers who had served in the war, and it expressly forbade any further settlement or land speculation west of the Allegheny Mountains. Great Britain wished to remain on good terms with their Indigenous allies, which was why it promised not to encroach on any more land in Native territory.
