In these two certificates from 1806, Colonel Thomas Mathews and surgeon Augustine Slaughter confirm the Revolutionary War service of free Black soldier William “Billy” Flora. A 1779 act of the General Assembly allowed soldiers who had served at least three continuous years in the Continental Army to receive land in present-day Ohio and Kentucky. Flora received 100 acres of land in what is now Ohio.
