In this February 13, 1940, letter to the Alexandria city manager, Samuel Wilbert Tucker, a Black lawyer, insists on Black residents’ right to use the Alexandria Library’s main branch. The library had refused to issue cards to Tucker and his client George Wilson. The city built a new branch for Black residents after an August 1939 sit-in protesting the segregated library.
