In this letter, dated July 10, 1787, John Stockdale explains that he was unable to make legible prints from a plate of John Smith’s Map that Thomas Jefferson sent him, after much delay, to be included in the English printing of his Notes on the State of Virginia (1785). Stockdale also reports that he couldn’t find any other engravings of the map to include in the book.
