This excerpt of notes from the congress to settle a boundary line for the British colonies describes discussions on October 28, 1768, between Sir William Johnson, British superintendent of Indian affairs for the Northern District, and leaders of the Haudenosaunee (the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy). An unnamed Indigenous “Speaker” and Johnson negotiate how to extend the boundary northward and southward. The Treaty of Fort Stanwix formalized the boundary line on November 5, 1768.
