In this letter written by Elizabeth “Eliza” Harriot Barons O’Connor to George Washington on October 7, 1788, she asks if she can visit him to get his advice on starting a girls’ school in North Carolina. In June 1788, she had opened Mrs. O’Connor’s Female Academy in Alexandria, and her educational philosophy was similar to Washington’s, who was a trustee of the male Alexandria Academy. In response to this letter, Washington invited O’Connor to his home, and she visited Mount Vernon from October 19 to October 22, 1788.
