In this excerpt from his journal dated January 17, 1779, the German lieutenant August du Roi reflects on the march he made from Boston to Charlottesville as part of the Convention Army of German and British prisoners of war captured during the Battles of Saratoga (September 19 and October 7, 1777). Du Roi also describes the poor state of the Albemarle Barracks when the Convention Army arrived.
