In this December 24, 1775, letter to Richard Henry Lee, Archibald Cary recounts the Patriots’ victory in the Battle of Great Bridge. They defeated British forces that included the Ethiopian Regiment, although the regiment did not take part in the battle. Cary writes that support for the revolutionary cause increased following Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation, which promised freedom to people enslaved by Patriots who joined British forces.
