Sir Thomas Gates

Sir Thomas Gates, governor of Virginia in 1610 and lieutenant governor from 1611 to 1614, is dressed in armor, long leather boots, and lace collar in an oil portrait displayed at Apethorpe Hall, a country house near Peterborough, England, built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. This photographic reproduction of the painting was printed in A Memorial Volume of Virginia Historical Portraiture 1585–1830, which was edited by Alexander W. Weddell and published by the William Byrd Press in 1930.
