Campeachy Chair

A Campeachy chair, a comfortable style of chair favored by Thomas Jefferson in his later years, is shown in front of the triple-sash windows in the parlor at Poplar Forest, his rural retreat in Bedford County. In a letter to his daughter Martha Jefferson Randolph in 1819, Jefferson complained that he was suffering from rheumatism at Poplar Forest and he ordered that a Campeachy chair made by his slave John Hemmings be brought from Monticello.
