Central Dining Room with Skylight

Light streams through a skylight into the dining room at Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's rural retreat in Bedford County. Jefferson designed the villa and positioned the dining room—a perfect twenty-foot cube—at the very center of the structure. The sixteen-foot skylight was one of the largest in America in the early nineteenth century.
