Abel P. Upshur
Abel P. Upshur, a Virginia lawyer and politician who served as U.S. Secretary of State under President John Tyler, is the subject of this 1844 lithographic portrait that includes a facsimile of his signature. A conservative states' rights advocate, Upshar played a key role in the treaty that allowed the annexation of Texas and its subsequent admission to the United States as a slave state.
