Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States (1837–1841) and the vice president under President Andrew Jackson (1833–1837), is the subject of this photographic portrait made by Mathew Brady in his New York studio. Because of his short stature and political prowess, Van Buren was dubbed "The Little Magician" by the press; nonetheless, Brady managed to make Van Buren appear taller than he was in this three-quarter-length standing view.
