Benezet instructing colored children.
An engraved illustration in John W. Barber and Elizabeth G. Barber's Historical, Poetical & Pictorial American Scenes (1850) depicts the Quaker abolitionist Anthony Benezet teaching Black children. The accompanying text describes the French-born "philanthropist" as a "friend to the poor and distressed of every description," and as a man who made "great exertions to have the slave trade suppressed."
