The little Owl.

This hand-colored etching of an owl is from volume 1 of Mark Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (1731). An English naturalist and artist, Catesby published the first comprehensive study of the flora and fauna of the English colonies of North America. He identified this bird as "The little Owl," with the scientific name Noctura aurita minor; today it is known as the eastern screech owl with the scientific name Megascops asio.
