Will be Sold

A broadside dated February 17, 1812, announces the upcoming sale of "Valuable Slaves," among them a skilled carpenter, a brick maker, a tanner, a field hand, two young women house servants, and five children. These enslaved men, women, and children were to be sold in front of the Eagle Tavern, in some unidentified town. A handwritten annotation at the bottom of the broadside notes that this document was found in a house near the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia. The house was owned by a Dr. Brockenbro.
