Thomas Jefferson’s Grave

An obelisk in the family cemetery at Monticello marks the grave of Thomas Jefferson, who died at home on July 4, 1826. Jefferson left instructions that the obelisk should be inscribed with his life dates and with what he regarded as his three most important achievements: author of the Declaration of Independence, author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and father of the University of Virginia.
