You Shudder at the Picture! Of Course You Do.
Beneath the headline, "You Shudder at the Picture! Of Course You Do," an illustration depicts the lynching victims Charles W. Miller, John Scott, and Robert Burton hanging from a tree in Clifton Forge, Virginia, on October 18, 1891. The three miners had been lynched the previous night. This broadside was used to advertise the Richmond Planet, an African American weekly newspaper under the editorship of John Mitchell Jr., who regularly reported on lynching. The advertisement asks potential subscribers: "Are you against Lynch-law?" If so, then "Read the PLANET." The newspaper states its purpose: "It tells what the colored people are doing. It shows up the wrong-doing as practiced upon the Race. It calls for justice for all men …"
