Detail of Sunken Ships

This detail from Sebastian Bauman's map of York and Gloucester, made in 1782 to commemorate the Battle of Yorktown (September 28–October 19, 1781), shows a row of sunken navy vessels off the coast. Sunken ships could be used as a barricade and sometimes the Continental Navy would intentionally sink vessels to avoid them being commandeered by the British.
