Works Progress Administration Housing Poster

In a poster produced by the Works Progress Administration in 1936, a stylized criminal holds a gun in front of a backdrop of apartment buildings. The caption reads: “Eliminate crime in the slums through housing.” The poster was part of a series created by the New York Housing Authority to promote the Housing Law of 1937 (Wagner-Steagall Housing Act). The poster series promised that planned housing would eliminate crime in the slums, end infant mortality, and prevent juvenile delinquency.
