This e-mail made the rounds here at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities yesterday:
Dear Board Members and Staff,
I am delighted to report that “With Good Reason” has just been named to receive a 2009 Gabriel Award in the category of “Best News/Informational Radio Programming.” Presented by the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals, the prestigious Gabriel honors “works of excellence in broadcasting …which serve viewers and listeners through the positive, creative treatment of concerns to humankind.” Among the other 2009 Gabriel winners are the CBC, The Bob Edwards Show, WBUR in Boston, and southern California’s KCRW.
Hearty congratulations and felicitations are due to the whole With Good Reason team—Senior Producer and Host Sarah McConnell and Associate Producers Elliot Majerczyk and Jesse Dukes—for this well-deserved national recognition, the first Gabriel Award for VFH Radio. WGR Publicity Coordinator Lydia Wilson, who researched the Gabriel and planned our submission, also deserves special thanks.
“In the Wake of Violence,” the 2008 program for which With Good Reason is being honored, features the VFH’s Roberta Culbertson, who directs the Center on Violence and Community, discussing ways to mitigate the effects of violence after massacres. Also interviewed is David Niyonzima, who partnered with Roberta at the Center and, in conversation with Sarah, movingly explores trauma healing and reconciliation in his war-weary native country, Burundi. As the program closes, WGR Correspondent Nancy King features James Sochinski and the Marching Virginians of Virginia Tech, who offer a touching musical tribute to the 32 Virginia Tech students and professors who died on April 16, 2007.
We hope that you will tune in online to listen to “In the Wake of Violence.” And, of course, we invite you to tune in each week on your local public station, to hear the latest episode of WGR.
Cheers and best wishes,
A big congratulations to our colleagues at With Good Reason and VFH for a much-deserved award.
