William Fitzhugh of Chatham Miniature

William Fitzhugh of Chatham is the subject of this oval miniature portrait preserved in a locket in the collections of Arlington House. The locket also held a lock of brown hair. Fitzhugh was a Virginia planter and politician who resided at Chatham, a large plantation overlooking Fredericksburg. He was Mary Randolph Custis Lee's maternal grandfather. Fitzhugh’s blind right eye is visible in the portrait, the result of a childhood injury with a bullwhip.
