William Cabell’s County Lieutenant Commission
By this commission, planter William Cabell became the first lieutenant of Amherst County and commander of the Amherst militia. The commission gave him the authority to raise and arm a militia of men between the ages of eighteen and sixty in his county. Virginia lieutenant governor Francis Fauquier signed the commission on May 1, 1761. This reproduction of the original document appears in the book The Cabells and Their Kin (1895), by Alexander Brown.
