Virtual Tour of the White Oak Primitive Baptist Church

This virtual tour shows the exterior and interior of the White Oak Primitive Baptist Church in Stafford County. Established in 1789, the church has served the needs of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia for over a century. Constructed around 1830, this building became highly significant to maintaining community bonds for the Patawomeck people, particularly after the Civil War. In 1868, a community school was established on the property in a shed adjacent to the church. Though this school building is no longer exists, it was one of the earliest schools within the community. This church served as the mother church to other churches that served the Patawomeck community by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Nevertheless, Patawomeck people continued to be buried in the White Oak Primitive Baptist cemetery into the present century despite not being official members of the church. Today, the trustees of White Oak Primitive Baptist Church are all Patawomeck citizens, and the church holds regular monthly services.
