West Main Street

A few men stand outside of the Top Hat Barber Shop and Pool Room, a business on Charlottesville’s West Main Street next to the Leach Cafe. This portion of West Main Street largely served Charlottesville’s Black population. This photograph comes from the Vinegar Hill Appraisal Reports from 1960, when the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority attempted to determine the property value of the Vinegar Hill area.
