Washington Taking Command of the American Army

George Washington, riding on a white horse, greets lines of Continental soldiers at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1775. Popular lithographers Currier & Ives, known for their beautiful but often sentimental prints, published this hand-colored lithograph in 1876, in commemoration of the centennial of American independence.
