Warrant Ordering a Slave Patrol in Loudoun County

This warrant, dated Sept. 2, 1826, calls for the creation of a patrol in Loudon County to address the “unlawful assembly of slaves & other parties,” which are rumored to be “frequently held in this Neighborhood.” The justice of the peace of Loudoun County addressed the warrant to a specific group of men, all called upon to join the patrol. The cover of the manuscript, where an address would usually be found, is labeled: “Warrant for a patrol.” The manuscript is unsigned.
