Vue de L’incendie de la Ville du Cap Français

Plumes of smoke and flame rise into the night sky from the port city of Cap Français (now Cap Haïtien) in Saint-Domingue in the early hours of June 21, 1793. French artist J.L. Boquet, an eyewitness to the burning of the city during the Haitian Revolution, produced at least three paintings capturing different moments of the uprising. This engraving, Vue de L’incendie de la Ville du Cap Français (View of the Burning of the Town of Cap Français), was made from one of those paintings.
