Virginia Gazette Goads Matthew Squire
In this article from the September 14, 1775, edition of John Pinkney’s Virginia Gazette, Pickney goads British naval officer Captain Matthew Squire, publishing Squire’s letter threatening to abduct the printer of the Norfolk Intelligencer. In late 1775, Squire, captain of the sloop HMS Otter, became the subject of a series of taunting articles in the Virginia press. Squire had spent the summer raiding Virginia plantations along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay, carrying away supplies and enslaved people.
