Urban Oasis

This photograph, taken in 1983 for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, shows five-year-old Shawn Richardson drinking from a garden hose. Richardson was a resident of Gilpin Court, a public housing unit in Richmond which was constructed from an urban renewal project for residents of the historically Black community of Jackson Ward.
