University of the State of Pennsylvania Fourth Street Campus

Pierre-Eugène du Simitiere drew this sketch of the University of the State of Pennsylvania Campus at Fourth and Arch Streets around 1770. The large Georgian style building on the left was the original college building, where courses and lectures were given, and the three-story building on the right was the dormitory. Simitiere was a Swiss artist and naturalist who opened a public “American Museum” in Philadelphia in 1782.
