Union Hill

This is a view of the front of Union Hill, a late-Georgian-style home completed in 1778 on the James River in Amherst County on the site of a former Tuscarora town. Originally part of a 25,000-acre estate, the mansion was commissioned by William Cabell, a planter, militia officer, and member of the wealthy Cabell family.

The house, constructed by enslaved workers in a symmetrical double-pile, center-passage style, consisted of eight rooms, each heated by its own fireplace. Four generations of the Cabell family lived in Union Hill. The last family resident, Lucy Gilmer Cabell, passed away in 1939.
