Uncle Henry: Ancien Régime

This Edward Virginius Valentine bust of a peacefully smiling bearded Black man dressed in an elegant cravat is meant to portray Henry Page, a man enslaved by the Valentine family prior to Emancipation. Uncle Henry: Ancien Régime is a racist caricature similar to a "Mammy," or an "Uncle Tom," a portrayal of a docile, kindly servant who was happy in his enslavement.
