Toussaint Louverture
The formerly enslaved political and revolutionary leader of Saint-Domingue, Toussaint Louverture, is the subject of this portrait by French artist Alexandre François Louis, Count of Girardin. Girardin completed the portrait a year after Louverture’s death, most likely having never met him in person. While many visual depictions of Louverture exist, none have been confirmed to be completed from life. Many were made as racial caricatures, designed to frighten white Europeans and colonists rather than represent a likeness of the man. Girardin's portrait, while most likely conjectural, is a more respectful portrayal of the military leader.
