This is the front page of the very first issue of The People’s Advocate, published in Alexandria on April 29, 1876. The newspaper was created by and for the Black community of Alexandria, with John Wesley Cromwell as its editor and Traverse Benjamin Pinn Sr. as its publisher and business manager.
