The Lady Bird Special

This photograph shows the Lady Bird Special, a decked-out train which first lady Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson used for a four-day whistle-stop campaign tour of the south in October of 1964. At each stop, Johnson would give a speech on behalf of her husband’s campaign, drawing from her own southern upbringing to appeal to voters. It was the first time that a first lady had campaigned to such an extent without her husband’s presence.
