The Chopawamsic Recreational Demonstration Area

This National Park Service Photograph shows the entrance sign to “Chopawamsic” park, renamed Prince William Forest Park in 1948, in Prince William County. In 1935 the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration removed a mostly Black population of farmers in Hickory Ridge and Batestown and used their land for a public recreation space, constructing five log cabin campsites.
