“The Alternative of Williams-Burg”

In this British political cartoon, entitled "The Alternative of Williams-Burg," published in February of 1775, a mob of club-wielding Virginians force a group of well-dressed members of the gentry to sign a non-importation agreement. Tar and feathers hang in the background, showing the implied consequences of not signing the terms. The cartoonist meant to argue that the resolves from Virginia's revolutionary conventions of late 1774 were not representative of public opinion.
