Takes all to Pay Taxes

This detail from Connecticut-born artist Amos Doolittle’s satirical cartoon, The Looking Glass for 1787, shows a farmer in a wide- brimmed hat holding a rake and a bottle, standing near a plow. He says: “Takes all to pay Taxes,” articulating a complaint made by cash-strapped farmers following the Revolutionary War (1775–1783).
