Standing Inside History

We’ve shown you Historypin before. It’s a site that allows you to line up modern photographs against historical views, and when some folks from Encyclopedia Virginia were on Grounds of the University of Virginia today, uploaded a few more, including the one above. It shows Charlotte Kohler, editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review from 1942 until 1975, handing a book to a student—a female student, in fact. Which means the date must be sometime after September 1970, when the College of Arts and Sciences admitted its first women. The location, meanwhile, is the West Range, home to the magazine’s offices until just recently.
Here’s a link to the photograph on Historypin. Now go add your own!
