George Washington Murray

George Washington Murray, a South Carolina Republican, is the subject of this photographic portrait. A former slave, Murray was the only African American member of the 53rd and 54th U.S. Congresses (1893–1897).

This image was published in Twentieth Century Negro Literature; or, A Cyclopedia of Thought on the Vital Topics Relating to the American Negro (1902), a volume written by "one hundred of America's greatest Negroes" and edited by Daniel Wallace Culp.
