Smith Family, Henrytown, 1926

The Smith family of Henrytown, near Saltville, Smyth County, poses for an outdoor group photograph in 1927. Ballad singer Texas Gladden stands the third from the left in the back row, next to her brother Hobarth who is holding a guitar. Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax somewhat romantically described the Smith household as one where a “fiddle, a banjo, a guitar, a harmonica or a piano is always rippling out a mountain tune.”
